I’m borrowing the title from today’s feature post because it’s so awesome. Take a walk around your house after decluttering, and you may start asking this question as well. An extra utensil in the utensil drawer, some unused cables in the box in the closet, some clothes that made the cut but still hang forlornly in the closet — What are you still doing here? Why didn’t you leave when I decluttered? Your next thought may very well be, “I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”
Dominique Joly of My Journey to Simplicity decluttered many items in 2015, by her estimates she removed 75% of her stuff. Now, in 2016 she walks around her apartment and thinks that she could remove more stuff. And so, as she walks around peeking in closets and drawers, she asks, “What are you still doing here?”
Here is one example:
When I set up my closet after moving in last September, I hung all of my clothes on the rod on the left side of my walk-in closet. As I wore items and washed them, I hung those pieces on the right. Some items haven’t moved. There are also clothes in my dresser drawers that I haven’t worn in about a year.
This is an awesome technique to discover the clothes you actually like to wear vs. those you think you like to wear. But, it requires follow through to remove the ones you don’t actually wear. This is exactly her plan, and she’s even taking it a step further by reevaluating all that remains.
I’ll remove the clothes that are still on the left side of my closet and start over again with what’s left on the right side. I know I haven’t worn many of those in a while either.
Dominique has a few other spots where she noticed things hanging around long after her big purge of 2015. Odds and ends, furnishings and accessories, kitchen utensils, and books are on her list.
Read through her blog post to get her thoughts on these items and her plans to address them. What are you still doing here?
I’m trying a new feature here on Fridays. I will share the most inspiring article I can find from the past week, and tie it in with a weekend challenge. I hope to motivate you to ramp up the decluttering and make some big progress. This weekend, I challenge you to go through the areas you already decluttered, and ask that stuff, “What are you still doing here?” If that stuff doesn’t give you a good answer, then kick it the heck out of there!
When you are done, come back here and share your successes in the comments section! I’m going to participate too, so check back and see what clutter I’m kicking out over the weekend.
