Whether you travel for work or for vacations, travel can get a bit stressful at times. There are some steps you can take to make travel less stressful, and today, Courtney Carver of Be More With Less tells us how. The Be More With Less Guide to Simple Travel
These are the highlights of what Courtney recommends (be sure to read her full post to get all the details):
- Identify the stress (and address it).
- Simplify your itinerary.
- Simplify your suitcase – only pack for half the trip, create a travel capsule wardrobe, only bring what you can comfortably carry.
- Live like a local.
- Extend your trip.
- Connect with a local.
- Capture your experience.
- Use public transportation.
- Take care of yourself.
I’d like to add a couple more tips:
Clean your home before you leave. After you are packed, but before you leave, go around your house and do a quick cleaning. Make sure all the dishes are done and put away, clear off tables and countertops, take out the trash, pick up anything left on the floor, and vacuum. Spending 30 minutes doing these tasks before you leave allows you to return to a peaceful and welcoming home.
Add a recovery day at home to the end of your vacation. Vacations can be exhausting. Following Courtney’s tips will help, but it’s always nice to have an extra day to relax at home before returning to work. You can take the time to nap, unpack, and unwind.
My favorite one of Courtney’s tips is to “Simplify your suitcase.” This is the most beneficial thing I have done to simply my travels. I pack for half the trip, which allows me to fit everything into a backpack. I typically wear things for more than one day, especially shorts and bathing suits, and there is usually an opportunity at some point to do a load of laundry. A time-out for a laundry day (or laundry couple of hours really) is a nice break from the usual running around that a vacation entails. It’s nice to plan that downtime to relax and do a load of laundry.
