Typically when we talk about decluttering we’re trying to toss the junk. Sometimes, when we downsize, we have to give up some luxuries also. Erin, blogger at A Welder’s Wife, shares her story of giving up some of her luxury items, 6 Luxury Items Eliminated from My Life for Good.
Here’s the list:
- Cable / Satellite TV
- Iron and Ironing Board
- Personal Dresser
- Dining table
I have given up some of these items also, and it’s not as bad as it seems when you first consider it. When we downsized to our first apartment, we had a dishwasher, but we rarely used it. I actually preferred washing dishes by hand. I don’t like how long it takes to use a dishwasher. You load it, wait forever for it to wash, forget to unload it, and then put off the unloading until the next time you need to wash a load of dishes. I like being able to take care of it all at once, even though it takes a little more work.
We got rid of our dresser completely. Instead we use our closet. Shirts are on hangers, and everything is folded Konmari style and placed in decorative boxes on a shelf.
Don’t be afraid to give up a little luxury as you downsize. You’ll quickly become accustomed to your new smaller space and all it entails.
